Malala Yousufzai is a young 14 year old school girl who lives in the Swat-Valley in Pakistan, an area where the citizens were controlled heavily by the Taliban. She began speaking up against the oppression of women by the Taliban and started a blog criticizing the behaviour and methods of the Taliban.
“They were slaughtering people and they flogged a girl in front of a crowd and they did so many things and they took control of the Swat Valley, they banned girls from getting an education and they spread fear, they spread terror in the whole area of Swat.” - Malala Yousufzai
Wanting to become a politician, she was fighting for womens rights for education in the area which was halted by the Taliban and she openly stated that the Taliban are after her and would kill her at any moment.
“ I was very scared that the militants can throw acid on my face and they can do anything. So in that time, all girls used to hide their books under their shawls to pretend that they are not students of the school.”- Malala Yousufzai
“I think in the month of January 2009 it was like the darkest month of our history. And I was back to my home after the school departure and a man was following me, he was talking to someone else on his phone but I thought he was talking to me and I didn’t look behind and he was telling that I will kill you and I will teach you a lesson, something like that.
And I just rushed to my home. It was a climax of fear there. ” - Malala YousufzaiWhile she was at school a man came up to a student and asked for a girl named “Malala” so the student pointed towards Malala and he pulled out his pistol and shot her in the head. He also ended up wounding 2 girls who were near her.
“The other man said where is Malala and one student pointed toward her and the man started firing a handgun. Then I don’t know what happened to me and I found myself in hospital. ” - Shazia Razaman
The Taliban proudly spoke out claiming to be responsible for the attack.
“She is a Western-minded girl. She always speaks against us. We will target anyone who speaks against the Taliban. We warned her several times to stop speaking against the Taliban and to stop supporting Western NGOs, and to come to the path of Islam.” - Ehsanullah Ehsan (Taliban Spokesman)
Subhan’Allah doctors say she will recover and the bullet was removed from her spine. She has been recognised as a Hero globally. Last year, Yousufzai received the first ever Pakistani National Peace Prize for her efforts to provide education for young girls. She was also nominated to receive the international peace prize from the Dutch organization ‘Kids Rights’.
When your greatest threat is an educated, confident young lady, what great cowardice and shame you must hold deep in your heart.
